Built in 1720, with 1780 and 1860 additions, every inch of The Joseph Pierson House celebrates its remarkable heritage with wood floorboards more than a foot wide, roughly hewn ceiling beams, extra deep window sills, and a massive cooking fireplace with beehive oven. Totaling 1.41 acres, the land surrounding the stone house feels like a country farmstead with its long gravel driveway, flower patches, and a barn that may be restored over time. The home’s interior is a blissful balance of romantic and rustic, a mix of cozy spaces and generous rooms washed in natural light. The kitchen has a vaulted ceiling over ample granite countertops and French doors beside the breakfast area. An exposed brick fireplace adds even more texture to the adjoining dining room. While the “keeping room” is the warm heart of the home, the west-facing living room is also an elegant, welcoming spot to gather. The second floor features a large bedroom and darling office, served by a full bath accessible via two staircases. The third floor offers a surprisingly spacious bedroom and bathroom suite. Some say the Pierson House was a stop on the Underground Railroad. While that is possible, what is certain is the property’s significance as one of the area’s oldest residences with its remarkable random stone construction with 30-inch walls. This local historic treasure is directly adjacent to the Mercer Meadows park system and Lawrence-Hopewell Trail—and just around the bend from popular Terhune Orchards.
